This is it. It is finally happening. The Trans-Africa adventure is all set to start on May 13, 2019. After an involved and long search, Richard Schiller has taken the leap and has decided to join me for this adventure. An accomplished rider of dirt, track, and street, Richard and I have travelled together to places like Iceland and Brasil.
We are both riding identical liquid-cooled BMW R1200GS Adventure motorcycles. So, finally, this week, our motorcycles were picked up for their journey to South Africa. In the meantime, we are exploring medical and evacuation insurance options, the pros and cons of getting a Carnet de Passages en Douane (or CPD) to simplify the crossing of the motorcycles across borders, evaluating satellite communication options, etc.
We have also been busy planning the the details of the route, tentative lodgings, studying geopolitical events in the countries we are visiting, areas that are a must to see, vaccinations, and something for malaria.
Interestingly enough, last week, there was coup d'état in Sudan which removed Oamr al-Bashir from power after 30 years. Just one more thing to monitor once we get closer.
At the end of the trip we expect to have visited 12-15 countries: South Africa, Botwswana, Zambia, Tanzania, Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya, Malawi, Ethiopia, Sudan, Egypt. Maybe Lesotho, Swaziland, Mozambique, Burundi, Eritrea and Djibouti. Hopefully in 60-75 days.
Like they say, you live an adventure like this twice ... once while planning it and then as you live it!
